House Crickets

Sitting outside on a summer’s evening, listening to the crickets chirping sounds great, but if you hear the sound inside your house when you are trying to get to sleep, it is not so nice. The male can ‘sing’ quite loudly. These night-time creatures are like grasshoppers in that they use their hind legs to jump.
Color – Black to brown
Length – ½ - 5/8" with flattish bodies
Diet – They are scavengers and enjoy feeding on organic materials. They like fungus, seedlings and rotting plants.
Habitat – During the day, you will find them under rocks and logs and in other dark places as they are nocturnal creatures.
Impact – Due to their love of organic materials, they are helpful in aiding the composting process. On the more negative side, they are a hazard when it comes to young plants, as they will destroy them. A single male cricket inside your home can make lots of noise.
