Termites
Every year significant damage is caused to homes and other buildings due to the destructive damage termites can cause. The cost of repairs to your home can be astronomical if you have termites, as their primary source of food is wood.
Dampwood Termites:
Compared with dry wood termites, dampwood are slightly different because they are a little larger.
Color – Brown
Length – ½ - ⅝" long with an oval-shaped, narrow body
Diet – Their main diet is wet or damp wood.
Habitat – These class of termite depends on moisture, so where wood is consistently soaked with water is where you are likely to find them.
Impact – Due to their love of wet wood, they are most likely to cause an impact in a home which is continuously wet or in a wooded area.
Drywood Termites:
Unlike other types, the drywood termite is uncommon and live in colonies.
Color – Light brown
Length – 3/8 - 1" in length with a slim, oval-shaped body
Diet – They mostly eat wood, wallpaper, plastic and fabrics which are plant-based.
Habitat – Typically found in dry wood
Impact – They can burrow into the wooden structures and supports of your home and create their nest. Their tunneling can cause structures to become weak and unstable.
Subterranean Termites:
These are the most dangerous type of termite and create the most damage to homes and other properties.
Color – They vary from peach to brown
Length – 1/8 - 1" long
Diet – Their main food sources are wood, wallpaper, fabric (plant-based) and wood
Habitat – They need moisture to survive so they must sustain their contact with the soil. You may see signs of mud tunnels near to wooded areas of your house.
Impact – This is the most common, but the most destructive termite of all. If you believe you may have termites, do not wait to get them removed, they will cause severe damage to your home.
